Persistent winds prevents offshore access to migratory species

Anna Maria Island Fishing Conditions in November

As we head into November, Anna Maria Island anglers are patiently waiting for the wind to stop blowing.

After experiencing one of the windiest Octobers on record, most anglers are ready for the winds to calm down so they can venture into the Gulf of Mexico to search for migratory fish like Spanish mackerel, bonito and especially kingfish.

With water temperatures in the low to mid 70s, we should be seeing the long awaited fall migration of kingfish, although with strong winds and rough seas, it’s impossible to get out to find the bite.

Kingfish Migration and Offshore Fishing

In most cases, concentrations of kingfish can be found anywhere from 5-8 miles offshore, but with the consistently rough conditions in the Gulf getting out to these distances have been challenging at best, leaving the kingfish bite to be somewhat unknown. But once we get on more conducive pattern of light easterly breezes and calm seas, I’m willing to bet the reports of kingfish should become frequent in the weeks to come.

Kingfish Fishing Gear and Tackle Tips

When they do, don’t go out there under-gunned as kingfish can be up to 20-30 pounds on average depending on the school you find. Medium-heavy spinning gear with a full spool of 20-30 pound braid is a good idea as a large kingfish can peel off 100 yards of line before you even know what’s happening.

Bring plenty of wire rigs as well to prevent the sharp teeth of the kingfish from cutting your leader.

As far as boating, these fish, a gaft will come in handy for large specimens you plan to keep. For smaller ones, a landing net will suffice and it ensures that the fish can be released unharmed.

Anna Maria Island Backcountry Fishing Report

On my Just Reel charters, I’m spending more days on the dock than on the water as the consistently strong winds prevail.

On the calmer days, backcountry fishing for snook and redfish is producing good action.

Casting live shiners along mangrove shorelines and oyster bars leads to numerous hookups on both species. Spotted seatrout are being caught on deeper flats where clean, clear water exists. Water clarity is definitely a factor as it seems the bite is much better in the clearer locations. Mixed in are ladyfish and jack crevalle.

Gulf Beach Fishing for Spanish Mackerel

Finally, on days with east winds, fishing along the Gulf beaches is producing Spanish mackerel, blue runners, and jack crevalle.
